What code P0011 means
Camshaft timing is further advanced than the DME commanded. On BMW direct-injection engines this is usually a Vanos / Valvetronic issue or a stretched timing chain. Check oil level and pressure first; a tired Vanos solenoid or low oil pressure can produce the same code.
How to read a cam-timing code
P0011 / P0014 codes say the cam timing is further advanced (or retarded, for the P0012 / P0015 cousins) than the DME commanded. The cause is either the Vanos / Valvetronic actuator or the timing chain itself.
- Check oil level and pressure.
Cam-timing actuators need oil pressure to hold position. Low oil or worn oil-pressure control valves produce timing codes that look like chain stretch.
- Read cam timing live.
Compare actual vs commanded. If one cylinder bank is off, suspect that bank’s actuator. If both are off, suspect the chain.
- Inspect the Vanos solenoids.
The intake and exhaust solenoids each have a screen that clogs. Cleaning restores operation in many cases.
- Check for stretched chain symptoms.
Crank-to-cam correlation off by more than a few degrees at warm idle, with both intake and exhaust timing drifting, usually means the chain has stretched beyond its service life.
