BMW service procedure

DPF regeneration on a BMW diesel.

The DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) traps soot from the exhaust and burns it off periodically in a process called regeneration. Passive regeneration happens during normal motorway driving; active regeneration is commanded by the DDE (Digital Diesel Electronics) module when soot loading reaches a threshold. Short-trip driving that prevents either form of regeneration produces a DPF warning and, eventually, a forced regeneration request.

What this procedure applies to

N47 (E-series 2.0L diesel), M57/N57 (E/F-series 3.0L diesel), B47 (F/G-series 2.0L diesel), B57 (G-series 3.0L diesel). DPF regeneration targets the DDE module.

When to use it

When the DDE reports elevated soot loading or when the DPF warning is on. A forced regen is a write path and a high-risk one — the DDE commands post-injection to raise exhaust temperature; the car must be stationary outdoors (or in a workshop with proper exhaust extraction) for 15–30 minutes.

Steps

  1. Confirm the DPF really needs regen.

    Read the soot-loading value and the differential-pressure reading from the DDE. If they’re below the regen threshold, do not force one — the car will do it passively on the next motorway drive.

  2. Confirm the car is safe for forced regen.

    Outdoors or workshop with exhaust extraction. Engine and coolant at operating temperature. Battery maintainer connected. No flammable materials near the exhaust outlet. Transmission in Park (auto) or Neutral (manual).

  3. Run the forced-regen routine.

    Beemuu’s Service Functions tab targets the DDE with the regen routine. The DDE commands post-injection and the engine runs at elevated RPM for 15–30 minutes.

  4. Monitor throughout.

    Do not leave the car unattended. Watch coolant temp, oil temp and the regen-progress signal. If anything goes wrong, stop and let the routine abort.

  5. Verify after.

    Re-read soot loading and differential pressure. Soot loading should be at the initial value; differential pressure should drop back to the clean-DPF baseline.

Safety first

Forced DPF regen is a HIGH-RISK write path. The exhaust gets very hot. The car must be outdoors or in a workshop with exhaust extraction. Coolant and oil temperatures rise. Do not leave the car unattended. A battery maintainer is mandatory; an interrupted regen can leave the DPF partially regenerated with elevated differential pressure.

Verification status

DPF regen is on the known-missing list in docs/validation/service-functions.md. The routine ID is a placeholder. Real DDE modules expect specific routine IDs that are not published. Do not use Beemuu’s placeholder routine ID on a customer’s car; verify against ISTA first. The procedure described above is the general shape; the routine ID is the project-specific unknown.

Is the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) regeneration routine ID verified?

No. The routine ID in the project is a placeholder per the v0.8.0 audit. Real BMW modules expect specific IDs that the project does not have in-repo.

No. The procedure describes the general shape; the routine ID itself needs to be verified against ISTA on a real chassis.
