Generic OBD-II code: long-term fuel trim is too far positive (the engine is adding fuel to compensate for a perceived lean condition). On a BMW the usual suspects are a vacuum leak, a failing crankcase-vent valve, a tired MAF sensor, low fuel pressure, or an exhaust leak ahead of the upstream O2 sensor. Read fuel trim live, then look for the underlying cause rather than parts-replacing the sensor.
How to read a fuel-trim code
P0171 and P0174 (Bank 1 / Bank 2 system too lean) are evidence, not parts orders. Long-term fuel trim is the DME telling you that it has been adding fuel to compensate for something. The something is the actual diagnosis.
- Read short-term and long-term fuel trim live.
Both should hover near zero at idle and cruise. A persistently positive long-term trim is what raises this code.
- Smoke-test the intake.
The most common cause on a BMW is unmetered air entering the intake after the MAF sensor. Common leak points: crankcase vent valve, valve cover gasket, intake manifold gasket, vacuum lines.
- Inspect the MAF sensor.
A dirty or failing MAF reads lower than actual airflow, driving trim positive. Cleaning is a worthwhile first step on a high-mileage sensor.
- Verify fuel pressure.
An under-pressurised fuel rail makes the DME compensate with trim. Confirm rail pressure before condemning a sensor.
