Long-term fuel trim on Bank 2 is too far positive. Same diagnostic path as P0171: smoke-test intake, inspect MAF, verify fuel pressure. On V6/V8/flat-6 engines the upstream cause is often asymmetric — check Bank 2-specific components (vacuum lines, intake gasket, injector harness).
How to read a fuel-trim code
P0174 means long-term fuel trim on Bank 2 is too far positive. Same diagnostic principles as P0171 but on the other bank.
- Compare Bank 1 and Bank 2 trims.
If only Bank 2 is high, the leak is on Bank 2 only — an asymmetric vacuum leak, a Bank-2-only intake gasket issue, or a Bank-2 O2 sensor that’s gone lazy.
- Smoke-test Bank 2.
The crankcase vent valve and the valve cover gasket are common leak points on BMW V8s and inline-6s.
- Swap the O2 sensors side-to-side.
If the code follows the sensor (now Bank 1 high), the sensor is the fault. If the code stays on Bank 2, the upstream cause is real.
- Verify fuel pressure.
An under-pressurised fuel rail makes both banks compensate with trim, but a single stuck pressure regulator tends to affect one bank more.
