What code P0420 means
The post-catalyst oxygen sensor activity is too similar to the pre-cat sensor — the catalyst is not storing enough oxygen. Catalysts rarely fail outright. Most often caused by an exhaust leak ahead of the rear sensor, an old downstream O2 sensor, or an engine that has been running rich for a long time. Confirm with a live voltage trace on both O2 sensors before condemning the cat.
How to read a catalyst-efficiency code
P0420 / P0430 mean the catalyst is not storing enough oxygen. The diagnosis is upstream of the cat itself in most cases.
- Inspect for exhaust leaks.
An exhaust leak ahead of the downstream O2 sensor lets extra oxygen in, fooling the sensor into seeing a healthy cat. Check the flex joint, the pre-cat pipe and the oxygen sensor bungs.
- Compare pre- and post-cat O2 voltages live.
The pre-cat sensor should be switching rapidly between rich and lean. The post-cat sensor should be slow and steady. A post-cat sensor that mirrors the pre-cat one is what raises this code.
- Check the long-term fuel trim history.
An engine that has been running rich for a long time can load the cat with unburned fuel and reduce its storage capacity.
- Inspect the cat physically.
If the cat has been hit by a foreign object or has crumbled internally, no amount of upstream repair will fix it. Physical inspection is the last step, not the first.
