How to read a catalyst-efficiency code
P0430 means the post-catalyst oxygen sensor on Bank 2 shows activity that is too similar to the pre-cat sensor. The cause is almost always upstream of the cat, not the cat itself.
- Inspect for exhaust leaks.
An exhaust leak ahead of the downstream O2 sensor lets extra oxygen in. Check the Bank 2 pre-cat pipe, the flex joint and the oxygen sensor bungs.
- Compare pre- and post-cat O2 voltages live.
Pre-cat sensor should switch rapidly between rich and lean; post-cat should be slow and steady. A post-cat that mirrors the pre-cat one is what raises this code.
- Check long-term fuel trim history.
An engine that has been running rich for a long time can load the cat with unburned fuel.
- Inspect the cat physically.
If the cat has been hit by a foreign object or has crumbled internally, no upstream repair will fix it.
