Headline failures on the N54 3.0L twin-turbo I6 (E8x/E9x/E60/E89, 2006–2013)
The N54 is famous for HPFP failures (29E0/29E1/29E2 codes), index-12 injector failures, charge-pipe blow-off under boost (30FF), and VANOS solenoid clogging (2A82). Per-cylinder misfire codes (P0301–P0306) often point at the injector or coil on a single cylinder — always read the misfire counter histogram before changing parts. Lean codes (P0171) on a tired N54 are most often a vacuum leak or a tired MAF, not a fuel-delivery problem.
Codes to scan for

| 2A82 | VANOS intake control fault |
| 30FF | Turbocharger, charge-air pressure too low (underboost) |
| P0300 | Random/multiple cylinder misfire detected |
| P0301 | Cylinder 1 misfire detected |
| P0302 | Cylinder 2 misfire detected |
| P0303 | Cylinder 3 misfire detected |
| P0304 | Cylinder 4 misfire detected |
| P0305 | Cylinder 5 misfire detected |
