Engine-specific DTCs

N54 fault codes.

The N54’s headline failure mode is the high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) on the direct-injection system, followed by the well-known index-12 injector failures and the VANOS solenoid clogging. This page lists the codes an N54 actually throws in the field, with direct links to each code’s full diagnostic page.

Headline failures on the N54 3.0L twin-turbo I6 (E8x/E9x/E60/E89, 2006–2013)

The N54 is famous for HPFP failures (29E0/29E1/29E2 codes), index-12 injector failures, charge-pipe blow-off under boost (30FF), and VANOS solenoid clogging (2A82). Per-cylinder misfire codes (P0301–P0306) often point at the injector or coil on a single cylinder — always read the misfire counter histogram before changing parts. Lean codes (P0171) on a tired N54 are most often a vacuum leak or a tired MAF, not a fuel-delivery problem.
