Engine-specific DTCs

S55 fault codes.

The S55’s headline failure mode is the crank hub — a known problem across M3/M4 model years that throws cam-timing and crank-position codes. Rod-bearing failures on cold-driven cars produce metal-in-oil codes and low oil-pressure warnings. The S55 is built for track duty and demands stricter service discipline than the N55-derived road cars.

Headline failures on the S55 3.0L twin-turbo I6 (F80/F82/F87 M, 2014–2021)

The S55 is built for track duty and the failure modes reflect that. The headline issue is the crank hub — a documented problem across M3/M4 model years that throws P0011/P0014 cam-timing codes when it slips. Charge-pipe blow-off under hard use produces 30FF boost codes. Per-cylinder misfires (P0301–P0306) on the S55 should be inspected for both coil and injector failure, as the S55’s higher-output fuel system is harder on injectors than the N55 road-car variant.
