Block architecture
N55: open-deck block. S55: closed-deck block. The S55’s closed-deck block supports higher cylinder pressures and is the foundation for the higher-output M-car design.
Stock power
N55 stock: 300–320 hp. S55 stock: 425–444 hp. The S55 makes ~120 more hp at the crank out of the crate. The difference is meaningful: 0–60 in 4.5s on the 335i vs 4.1s on the M3.
Turbo design
N55: single twin-scroll turbo (one turbo housing, two scrolls). S55: twin turbochargers (two small turbos, one per cylinder bank). The twin-turbo design on the S55 supports more total airflow at high RPM but has slightly more lag at low RPM.
Cylinder head
N55 head: B-family head adapted for road-car output. S55 head: B-family head redesigned for M-car output — higher-flow intake ports, stronger valve springs, revised exhaust ports. Same family, very different specification.
Common faults compared
N55: VANOS solenoid clogging, charge-pipe blow-off (the OEM plastic pipe can’t hold sustained boost), ignition coil failures on early production. S55: rod-bearing recall (early production), VANOS solenoid clogging (same fix as N55), charge-pipe blow-off (same root cause). Both engines share the VANOS issue. The S55 had the rod-bearing recall; the N55 did not.
Why the M-car costs more
The S55’s closed-deck block, twin-turbo design, M-specific head, and reinforced bottom-end all add cost. The N55 is the cheaper engine to build and service. The M-car cost premium reflects the engineering investment.
The decision
N55 is the cheaper entry into the 3.0L inline-6 platform; the cars are well-documented and parts are cheap. S55 is the M-car: more power, more character, more expensive to buy and service. Both are good engines; the right one depends on what you want from the car.
