Reliability
The N54 is the famous problem child. The HPFP (high-pressure fuel pump) is the headline: on the N54, the HPFP is the original direct-injection design from 2006, and it fails. The N55 replaced it with a more reliable design. The 335i, 135i, 535i, Z4 35i, and X5 35i on the N54 are all known for HPFP failures; the same chassis with the N55 (the LCI 335i, the 435i, the M235i) are notably more reliable.
The other N54 failure mode is the index-12 injector failure. Direct-injection injectors run at very high pressure and high temperature; the N54’s injector design has a known failure mode where one or more injectors develop internal leaks. The N55’s injector design is more reliable but not immune.

Common fault codes
Both engines share the same DTC families — fuel pressure, VANOS, boost, misfire. The codes an N54 actually throws in the field:
- 29E0 / 29E1 / 29E2 — fuel rail pressure (HPFP headline)
- 2A82 — VANOS intake
- 30FF — boost pressure (charge-pipe blow-off)
- P0300 / P0301–P0306 — misfire (injector or coil)
- P0171 — system too lean (vacuum leak, MAF)
The N55 shares most of the above and adds:
- Ignition coil failures on early production (per-cylinder misfire codes)
- Charge-pipe separation under boost (same 30FF code, different cause)
Verdict
If you’re choosing between a used N54 and N55 of similar mileage and condition, the N55 is the better choice for reliability. The HPFP design is more reliable, the injector design is more reliable, and the larger community knowledge base means more verification reports and more published testplans.
If you’re tuning and chasing every last horsepower, the N54 has the stronger aftermarket community. Stage 1 tunes are similar between the two; Stage 2+ (big turbo, built motor) is the N54’s territory. But the maintenance cost differential is real: a single HPFP replacement on the N54 runs ~$1500 at an indie shop; the same job on the N55 is rarely needed.

Which is faster?
Stock: N54 was slightly higher in tune (306 hp vs 300 hp). N55 has faster spool and less turbo lag from the single twin-scroll design. Aftermarket: both are good; N54 has a stronger tuning community.
Is my 335i an N54 or N55?
Pre-LCI 335i (2006–2012) is the N54. LCI 335i (2013–2015) and post-LCI 335i (2016–2018) is the N55. Check the production date on the door jamb.
